The Power of Communication
July 4, 2008 – 4:19 pm
What do networks, blogging, the Internet and Ben Franklin have in common? Ross Smith explained to the Founders i
n his technology and blogging class that all four are related to communication. Franklin facilitated the spread of information as a printer in colonial America in a manner not unlike how the Internet spreads information today. With the advent of digital technology, communication between people became faster and easier than Franklin could have imagined. The students learned the finer points of blogging in Smith’s class, as well as the power connections between large groups of people can have on a society. Even Wikipedia, that ‘unreliable’ bane of high school English teachers, became an illustration of the power of communication. Smith explained that the user-generated content of the Wikipedia online dictionary illustrates how an open source Web Read More
12 a.m. – Do You Know What Your Kid Is Doing?
July 4, 2008 – 2:42 pm
Update: Odile’s story is picked up on Global Debate Web Site.
Steven Staszewski and Nasser Siadat sit side-by-side in warm comraderie. At first appearance, it would not occur in anyone’s mind that two nights ago they were loudly yelling at each other and breaking BFTF rules. That’s right Mrs. Siadat and Mrs. Staszewski – your sons
have been trouble.
12 a.m. means that the Founders have to be in their rooms for bed. However, when the R.A. on duty approached the boys’ wing to check that everyone was in their rooms, the R.A. came across a group of excited Fellows listening and videotaping as Steven and Nasser hotly debated about the 2006 33 Day War between Lebanon and Israel. Did I mention that the debate was not an assignment? Read More

Fellow Jire Featured
July 4, 2008 – 9:25 am
The Founder Fellows, all, are talented folks. There is further confirmation on BFTF’s Jire Bademosi (USA-Maryland). She has a lengthening history of positive activism for education. Click Juri’s name to read the full story which begins:
At age 16, Woodstock resident Adejire Bademosi already has a history of activism.
In the third grade, at Worthington Elementary School, she researched suspension rates in Howard County elementary schools and shared her findings with then-Superintendent John O’Rourke.
The suspension rates worried Bademosi, since students who are frequently suspended often end up dropping out of school, she said.
